Ornamental astronomical clocks and moving figures
Over the centuries, many sorts of instruments have been made to indicate the
progress of time. Between the simple sun dial and the state-of-the-art atomic
clock, there lies a world of ingenious constructions. An ornamental astronomical
clock for example, does not only indicate the time, but provides all sorts of
interesting information in relation to the zodiac, the sun, the moon and other
heavenly bodies. Their daily activities in space are projected onto the face of
the clock. It is only a short while ago that an astronomical clock consisted
exclusively of a mechanical transmission using gearwheels. This made it possible
to follow the instrument's operation visually. Although the visual aspect of the
operation has disappeared, the slightest course deviations of the heavenly
bodies can be corrected thanks to modern electronics and computer technology.
A sight for sore eyes
The combination of technical ingenuity, attractive design and colorful decoration makes an astronomical clock a veritable work of art. Tradition
dictates that an astronomical clock should indeed be a beautiful monument. Over
the centuries many cultures have provided their own interpretation of it. Moving
figures and other remarkable creations were added in order to beautify the
spectacle even more. At Eijsbouts we have revived the art of making astronomical
clocks, with or without moving figures. The illustrations in this brochure show
several endeavors to represent the concept of time using historical,
contemporary or fictive themes.
